gzip is a file format for file compression consisting of a 10-byte header, optional additional headers, a body compressed using Deflate algorithm, and an 8-byte footer. The extra bytes used to store the headers and footer can be eliminated by just keeping the body compressed as Deflate. For small amounts of text, the headers and footers will increase the size of the compressed text compared with original uncompressed text.
